Bespoke learning events

In addition to our design service Really Learning RUNS learning events of many different kinds. We lead or facilitate workshops, stakeholder conferences, modules, and longer programmes. We prefer to design the events we run, to meet your learning outcomes of course, but we do step into the breach when leaders are unexpectedly unavailable. We remain true to our design principles however, so we may cover a topic in a different way or rearrange the running order, but we always explain to you what we are proposing and why.

Examples of current and recent programmes include:

Developing others - an intensive workshop exploring the role of the line-manager in developing their staff, and developing participants’ skills in coaching and mentoring.

Handling conflict – a day-long workshop in which participants devlop their ability to analyse conflict situations and select appropriate behaviours.

Negotiating for agreement – a half-day look at the principles of negotiation and their application in health care settings.

Influencing organisational culture - offered at a number of different levels, from a half day workshop looking at some of the key issues, to a multi faceted organisational development programme in which the culture of the organisation is identified and challenged.

Influencing clinical quality - offered at two levels: a one-day workshop and a development programme for service leaders; explores the boundaries between clinicians and managers and enables managers of clinical services to identify interventions they can make to influence the quality of the services they manage.

Analysing service quality – a one day workshop considering means of measuring and monitoring health care quality.

Identifying service priorities – an 8-10 hour programme, often spread over two separate sessions with thinking time in between, which enables service and team leaders to identify for themselves the top priorities for their service.

Developing your service – a 20 hour programme incorporating Identifying service priorities which additionally allows service leaders to develop robust action plans to address the priorities they identify.

Making multi disciplinary teams work- there are reasons why multi disciplinary teams are difficult to lead. This one-day workshop explores them and allows participants to develop an action plan that will help them lead their team more effectively. A longer programme can also be commissioned, in which participants are then supported, in either action learning or personal development sets in their implementation of these plans so that learning is maximised.

Working across boundaries – a one-day workshop that explores the reasons why working across professional and agency boundaries can be so difficult, and allows participants to develop an action plan to address the difficulties associated with the particular boundaries they are most concerned about.

Really working together – a 20 hour programme spread over several weeks, in which team, service, and/or organisational  leaders consider the factors inherent in the care task that make working across professional and organisational boundaries so problematic, develop a robust action plan to deal with the factors most critical in their own settings , and reflect on their implementation.

Managing professionals – a one-day workshop that explores the reasons why managing professionals can be so challenging and enables participants to develop a set of strategies for becoming a more effective manager in their own setting.

Learning how to learn – a one –day workshop that can also be offered over two half days, exploring the nature of learning and the means by which organisations can encourage learning in the workplace.

Regaining control - a one-day workshop in which participants analyse work situations in which they feel powerless and develop a toolkit that can help them be more influential. A longer programme can also be commissioned, in which participants are then supported, in either action learning or personal development sets in their implementation of these toolkits so that learning is maximised.

Using problems constructively – using systems thinking to analyse the causes of problems, and help distinguish between underlying causes and symptoms. This can be commissioned at a number of levels, from an introductory half-day workshop to a 30 hour programme over a number of weeks.

The essence of leadership – alternatively titled ‘How to develop followership’ this one-day workshop looks at the core concepts needed by leaders in health care. A longer programme can also be commissioned, in which participants are then supported, in either action learning or personal development sets in their implementation of these concepts so that learning is maximised.

Understanding your decision making – a half-day workshop exploring judgement, decision making and risk.

Choosing different kinds of evidence for different kinds of decision – a half day workshop considering the kinds of evidence that are needed to inform different kinds of decision.

Reflecting on practice – a one-day workshop exploring different forms of reflection allowing participants to develop a reflective agenda for their own practice. A longer programme can also be commissioned in which participants are facilitated in their reflection, using role play, action learning and coaching methods. This is particularly suitable for service leaders reflecting on their leadership role.

Encouraging genuine learning – a one-day workshop looking at the kinds of management behaviours, systems and structures that promote and inhibit learning within organisations. A longer programme can be commissioned in which participants reflect on their progress towards implementing behaviours structures and systems that encourage learning.

Making decisions collaboratively – A one-day workshop looking at means of genuinely collaborating over a decision; distinguishing between this and consulting, ‘gaining buy in’ or imposing; and enabling participants to develop a strategy for collaborating over a decision of importance to them.

Increasing your influence – a one-day workshop in which participants explore the reasons why they feel less influential than they wish to be within their organisation and develop action plans to overcome them. A longer programme can also be commissioned, in which participants are then supported, in either action learning or personal development sets in their implementation of these plans so that learning is maximised.

Designing services that work – A 20 hour programme that considers different means of analysing the way a service works and then of creatively redesigning it, drawing on the concerns of all those involved.
